Information Regarding Tapestry Choir membership
The following information is pertinent to all potential new members:
Do I have to know how to read music to be in TAPESTRY CHOIR?
No. Choir members are not required to read music or to play an instrument. Anybody who is 18 years or older is welcome to audition to become a member of TAPESTRY CHOIR. You need a passion for singing and the willingness to be part of a team, work hard and learn – that’s all! Music literacy classes are available for individuals interested in learning music notation.
What do I need to do to become a member?
You need to audition. It is a process:
(1) You submit an Audition Request Form online.
(2) You are invited to a casual online chat and brief audition.
(3) You may be asked to attend an open rehearsal and a second in-person audition.
How do auditions work?
The online chat and audition are an informal meet and greet with the conductor and will not last more than 10 - 15 minutes.
The in-person second round audition consists of an aural test, and a performance of two contrasting songs with the conductor and will be 15 - 20 minutes.
What repertoire does TAPESTRY CHOIR perform?
The Choir’s repertoire is varied. The repertoire is selected based on a defined theme; for example, Music of The Seven Continents. Tapestry Choir performs in French, Spanish, Setswana, and Yorta-Yorta an indigenous language from Australia. These works span genres such as classical, jazz, gospel, folk, and more. The focus is on music that enhances the mission of the Choir.
How often and where does TAPESTRY CHOIR perform?
The Choir performs at least once per month – as the ‘resident’ choir at church services, also at festivals and as guest choirs, and at our own concerts in collaboration with other musicians and choirs, an annual carols by candlelight, and for community-based organisations.
What are the membership fees to belong to TAPESTRY CHOIR?
The amount is determined at the beginning of every year, taking into consideration the proposed budget for the coming year.
An average amount would be R200 per month. Choir members do not get remunerated for performances.
When and where do rehearsals take place?
Rehearsals are on a Tuesday evening from 17:45 to 20:30. They are held at a church in Parkview. An open rehearsal for candidates will be on Tuesday, 16 September 2025.
Important Information for Choir Membership
Should you be selected as a member of The Choir, please take note of the following.
Membership fees are levied. The membership fee covers the choir’s running costs, which may include refreshments at choir events, music literacy courses, remuneration for the conductor and venue staff, workshops with experts in the field, sheet music, and other incidental costs.
Membership of TAPESTRY CHOIR entails more than just arriving for rehearsals and performances. The unique leadership structure encourages buy-in and ownership from every member. The commitment required of members imparts discipline, time management, and the value of social skills. In this Choir, every member is treated as valuable and appreciated. This, together with stage performance, public speaking, and solid teamwork, builds confidence and self-esteem.
Owing to the performance standard and level of commitment expected of members of the Choir, all new members will complete a three-month trial period.
