1. What is your name?
Simphiwe
2. How long have you been a member of Tapestry Choir, and what inspired you to join?
I’ve been part of the choir since its beginning in February 2024. Singing brings me so much joy, and it’s one of the best ways to help me balance work and life. I joined because I wanted to be in a social space where I could make music with people who share the same joy for it.
3. Can you share a memorable moment or performance with the choir that stands out to you?
There are many, but one that stands out is our rendition of The Lord’s Prayer, which we performed alongside a guest choir from the United States. The performance was particularly special because we dedicated it to a dear friend who has passed away.
4. What voice group do you sing in the choir, and what do you enjoy most about it?
I’m a 2nd tenor, and more than anything, I love the camaraderie among the tenors.
5. How has being part of Tapestry Choir impacted your personal or professional life?
Tapestry Choir has become one of my biggest sources of joy and helps me achieve a healthy work-life balance.
6. What is your favourite song to perform with the choir, and why?
I absolutely enjoy performing David Fanshawe’s The Lord’s Prayer from African Sanctus. It’s a beautifully layered piece that stirs me emotionally and spiritually every time.
7. Can you describe a typical rehearsal session with Tapestry Choir?
We usually start with relaxation and warm-up exercises, and sometimes some focus exercises. A typical rehearsal for me involves a lot of laughter and connection with other choir members as we learn, refine, and polish our repertoire.
8. What do you think makes Tapestry Choir unique compared to other choirs?
Apart from the diverse and colourful personalities, one unique aspect is our incorporation of other musical elements like the bass guitar and drums, which gives us a fresh sound.
9. How do you prepare for a performance, both individually and as a group?
Individually, I do self-study at home, going over the repertoire to build my confidence. As a group, we engage in focus exercises, voice, and body warm-ups to prepare.
10. What advice would you give to someone considering joining a choir like Tapestry?
Keep an open mind! Tapestry Choir offers a refreshing approach to choral music that might differ from traditional choral music expectations.
11. Can you share fun facts or something interesting about yourself that your fellow choir members might not know?
Here are fun facts about me:
I’m lactose intolerant but find it hard to resist dairy.
I’m not fluent in any of South Africa’s 11 official languages but can “fake it till I make it” in conversations!
I’m secretly obsessed with Southeast Asian BL dramas and films.
